Hospitals in low-income countries often lack the necessary number of nurses to sufficiently care for their patients during night shifts, especially in the pediatric wards. This leads to patients potentially dying in the night of treatable symptoms. We are working with Team Malawi and the Pediatric Medical Devices Institute to create a Bluetooth vital signs monitor for the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. Our device will have the capability of taking numerous vitals including: temperature, respiration rate, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and hemoglobin levels. The devices will all be connected via Bluetooth to a central monitoring device, which will alert the nurses on staff of any significant changes or abnormalities in any of the patient's vitals. The device will be worn by the patient as a strap around the chest. The strap is made of locally sourced rubber, and is padded using locally sourced fabric to provide comfort. The device is removable from the strap, allowing it to be easily cleaned. If a patient older than 5 years old needs to be monitored, the device can be applied to the wrist using a skin-safe adhesive.
